SoMMA Auditions

Upon arrival to camp, all students go through an audition process.  Ensemble seating and placement is based upon this initial audition, but it also allows the instructor to know what the section’s strengths are and what needs to be worked on through out the week.

Concert Band Audition:
Demonstrate a major/chromatic scales over the range of the instrument
Play a prepared etude or section of a larger piece to demonstrate musical ability
Perform a short sight reading excerpt

Jazz Band Audition:
Prepare any jazz tune you like.  These can be selected from one of the Jazz All-State pieces, a jazz standard or some of your music from jazz band (a difficult section part is OK).
If you wish to improvise, you can play over Bb or F blues.  A play-along recording will be provided.

*  Students who are interested can select to be considered for the student solo recital night.  Faculty members choose the best soloists from all the auditions to perform on Thursday night for the camp.  Soloists will be informed the first day of camp of their selection and will have time to rehearse with a SoMMA provided accompanist.  PLEASE HAVE ORIGINAL SCORES FOR THE ACCOMPANIST, no photocopies.
