Local Students to Perform in USM Youth Ensembles Spring Choral Concert

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine (USM) School of Music will present the USM Youth Ensembles in their spring choral concert next week in Corthell Concert Hall on the USM Gorham campus.

The concert will include the Southern Maine Youth Chorale (SMYC), conducted by Shannon Chase, and the Southern Maine Children’s Choir (SMCC), conducted by Paul McGovern. Each group will perform a lively program of spirited and inspiring pieces.

The details of the concert are:

  • USM Youth Ensembles Spring Choral Concert, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, Corthell Concert Hall, USM Gorham campus, 37 College Ave., Gorham; $8/$5 suggested donation at the door, prospective singers admitted at no charge; open seating; sponsored by Macy’s.

The SMCC is comprised of singers in grades four and up, and the SMYC includes singers in grades seven through 12.

The SMCC will perform a program of culturally diverse songs including “Jubilate, Alleluia!,” a joyful piece that combines Latin and English texts; “Al Shlosha D’varim,” a lyrical setting of the Jewish maxim, "The world is sustained by three things: by truth, by justice, and by peace"; and “Niška Banja,” a dance originating from European Romani cultures. The group also will perform American folks songs including “The Drinking Gourd,” originating from the Civil War era, and “Ching A Ring Chaw” partnered with “Great Gittin’ Up Morning.”

The SMYC will perform a program of American and international folks songs including “Elijah Rock,” a traditional spiritual, “Fiddler Man,” “Water is Wide” and “Banks of Doon.” The two groups will join to sing the finale, “Look at the World,” an inspiring piece celebrating springtime, nature and everyday miracles.

Angela Olszta, a USM School of Music graduate student in piano performance, will provide accompaniment for each group.

The concert is sponsored by Macy’s.
