Muskie School of Public Service

Another successful Husky Harvest!

Students from the Muskie School's Tourism and Hospitality program, in collaboration with Southern Maine Community College, the Confucius Institute and USM Campus Life, hosted the 5th annual Husky Harvest, a multicultural celebration with ethnic food, and entertainment on Wednesday, November 29 at the Woodbury Campus Center on USM’s Portland campus. Each year, the event is fully planned and executed by students of the Event Planning and Management course within USM’s Tourism and Hospitality program, under the direction of Maureen LaSalle and Dr. Sara Ghezzi. The mission of the course is to conceptualize and coordinate a fun, educational event that develops multicultural engagement and exchange, both at USM and in the Greater Portland region, through celebrating a variety of cultural traditions and food. Foods from countries such as Ethiopia, China, Italy, Somalia and more were represented. All food was donated by local restaurants, such as Niyat Catering, Babylon, Standard Baking Co., Luis’s, the Nonantum Resort, Coffee By Design and Mama Terra, among others. Over fifty local restaurants, hotels, and other organziations sponsored the event.  Dishes from around the world were also prepared and donated by Southern Maine Community College’s Culinary Arts program. Guests were encouraged to bring nonperishable food items to the event, which were then collected and donated to Preble Street Resource Center.
