Jesse Harvey, a current student in the Muskie School's Policy, Planning, and Management program has been an active participant in Maine's Harm Reduction community. In 2018 Jesse received the Harm Reduction Hero Award from the Health Equity Alliance.
Along with working towards his Master's degree, Jesse is the director and founder of Journey House, which provides recovery-oriented, evidence-based, and peer-run housing, as well as peer support and advocacy for individuals with Substance Use Disorder. In addition, Jesse is also founder of Portland Overdose Prevention Site and the Church of Safe Injection. Jesse's efforts have been featured both regionally and nationally including a recent NBC documentary and features in the Boston Globe. His work now includes chapters of the Church of Safe Injection in several cities and towns in Maine and has also influenced other communities across the eastern U.S. to adopt similar strategies for promoting harm reduction. Along with other students and community members, Jesse also engages in educating the community on harm reduction and will be hosting a panel discussion on the topic at USM on Friday April 5th. His tireless efforts in harm reduction education are impressive and noteworthy!
