Muskie faculty receives Faculty Senate award for Research Excellence

The Muskie School congratulates Dr. Kate Ahrens, Assistant Research Faculty in the Public Health program at the Muskie School, who was awarded a 2021 USM Faculty Senate award for research excellence.  She is an epidemiologist who focuses on maternal and child health and teaches courses on statistics and applied data analysis.

Dr. Ahrens was nominated by her peers who applauded her substantial research productivity and her committment to working with students and community partners. They remark on her prolific scholarship with more than 90 total peer-reviewed publications and note that "in 2020 alone, she had 17 peer-reviewed articles published or accepted for publication, including five with student authors."  Furthermore, they note that "despite the pandemic, she has continued to present at national/international conferences virtually, including six presentations during 2020. In addition to these academic dissemination strategies, Dr. Ahrens has worked with community partners to produce analyses and timely information of importance to Maine, including studies of substance-use affected births and heart infections among people who inject drugs."

We congratulate Dr. Ahrens on her significant research accomplishments!
