November 7, 2017
5:00 PM to 6:30 PM
133 Wishcamper Center, Portland Campus

USM Gloria S. Duclos Convocation, the Muskie School and the Data Innovation Project will host Laura Ligouri, Lecturer at Bates College and Executive Director and Founder of Mindbridge, who will give a talk on Racial Equity, Nonprofit Programming & Implicit Bias.  She will provide an introduction to the psychological & neurobiological foundations of implicit bias by discussing how the brain guides the way we perceive others. With a focus on social justice & racial equity efforts, this interactive lecture aims to increase awareness of how implicit bias impacts programming design, participation & effect.  Laura's work on inter-ethnic social conflict, which was inspired by her time as a coordinator and researcher at the Saxelab Social Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at MIT, seeks to elucidate the bidirectional, mutual constitution of culture and neurobiological processes that give rise to bias and discrimination.
