The Department of Environmental Science (DES) is an interdisciplinary program offering a B.A. in Environmental Planning & Policy and a B.S. in Environmental Science.

We also offer minors and/or certificates in Environmental Sustainability, Applied Energy, Nature Tourism, Environmental Science, Environmental Education, and Environmental Policy.

USM has launched an initiative to give students a faster, less expensive pathway from an undergraduate degree to a master’s degree in a professional field.
Choice magazine, a periodical distributed to over 22,000 academic librarians, faculty, and key decision makers, recently published a positive review of Daniel Martinez's book "The Path to More Sustainable Energy Systems".
SWANA is offering a $1,000 scholarship for the current academic year for undergraduates or graduate students committed to a degree closely tied to Solid Waste Management, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field of study.

Community Planning and Development Accelerated Admissions Program

Undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Planning and Policy who are in the spring semester of their junior year can apply for conditional admission to the master’s in Community Planning and Development. If accepted, students take courses throughout their senior year that count toward completion of both their undergraduate and master’s degrees. 

USM Connections

Joseph Staples, lecturer of Environmental Science, appeared on Episode Two of USM Connections - a half-hour program featuring Provost Stevenson interviewing USM Faculty about their research, how they enrich the lives of students, as well as the Greater Portland community.
