CTEL Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) Grants
Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) grants provide funding to assist faculty with bringing their technology-focused teaching and learning projects to life. Faculty who seek funding will need to apply for a TEL grant - see below for details and guidelines.
Grant criteria for advanced software requests:
CTEL is bound to consider the most economic option that still achieves the desired outcome. If you request funds for an advanced software application, we will explore a lower cost alternative (if available) and recommend it to you. You are encouraged to explain if you prefer a particular application when a more economic option is available. For example, Camtasia is a premium screen-recording software with advanced editing tools, where as Screencast-O-Matic offers many of the same features for a fraction of the cost. Your request for Camtasia will be funded only if you are able to justify a need for its advanced features. If not, we will direct you to the more economic option.
The following software applications do not require a TEL grant application:
• VoiceThread Instructor licenses
• Screencast-O-Matic Pro accounts
Faculty who would like either a VoiceThread or Screencast-O-Matic license can email either Rucha Modak (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Pieter Tryzelaar (email@example.com) for a quick approval. Faculty will then be directed to purchase the items out of pocket and then CTEL will reimburse them through Concur. Stepwise directions for reimbursement are available.
Grant criteria for Hardware requests:
Purchase of laptops, desktops and iPads/tablets are not funded through TEL grants. ITMS has an equipment loan program that may address some of your hardware needs: https://usm.maine.edu/itms/equipment-loan-program.
If you need something not loaned by ITMS, you’re encouraged to submit a hardware TEL grant. Please note that CTEL typically grants requests that are able to serve multiple entities across USM and not just a single instructor or department. If your request for highly specialized hardware is granted, you will be asked to partner with CTEL on studying its integration in student learning and disseminating that research through professional development seminars and/or scholarly publication.
The following hardware do not require a TEL grant application:
• Headsets (under $50)
• external webcams (under $50)
Faculty who would like either a webcam or headset can email either Rucha or Pieter for a quick approval. Faculty will then be directed to purchase the items out of pocket and CTEL will reimburse them through Concur. Stepwise directions for reimbursement are available.
Proposal, Review Process and Timeline
All proposals must be submitted online at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1rUnpvOvWs7TxLAmYx6pNGte11oV0ZCgZKfx3OonvKi8/viewform
Requests will be considered at least monthly. Please note:
- Proposals may be partially funded.
- Hardware may be purchased by ITMS for circulation to the entire campus rather than funding purchase for an individual (with priority given to the requestor for long term checkout if applicable).
