A new University of Southern Maine initiative aims to help young girls in the Greater Portland area join a growing network interested in science, technology, engineering and math.
It’s called STEM Sisters.
The group held an inaugural meeting in November at the Portland Public Library and is planning more for the coming year.
“Our mission is to inspire young girls and women to achieve balance in their educational and learning journey by making STEM accessible, relatable, and as an avenue through which we can make informed decisions about the world around us,” said the group on its website.
“The goal of the STEM Sisters' initiative is to help build on their educational foundations and develop critical thinking skills, curiosity, and foster a growth mindset by understanding how things work and how to apply design thinking and processes to applications in their own lives,” said the group.
