USM students helping Olympian connect Maine veterans with the community

The 2012 graduate of USM’s Occupational Therapy program created VAST — Veterans Adaptive Sports & Training — during the same year. Using grant money from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, she partnered with Pineland Farms in New Gloucester, Maine to offer veterans a free place to get together and the equipment and training to try lots of sports, from cross-country skiing and snowshoeing to archery, target shooting, basketball, tennis and disc golf.

Trustees approve promotions and tenure for four USM faculty members

The University of Maine System Board of Trustees approved tenure this Spring for two University of Southern Maine faculty members, Susan Noyes, Ph.D. and Leroy Rowe, Ph.D. This past Fall, trustees approved tenure for two other faculty members, Lin Lin, Ph.D. and Daniel Jenkins, Ph.D. All four are have been promoted to the rank of associate professor.

A new feature story in the Sun Journal examines the just-opened community clinic at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College. Reporter Kathryn Skelton talked with the mom of a child at the clinic, some of the Master’s in Occupational Therapy students who run the facility and Mary Anderson, the clinic's coordinator and a lecturer in the MOT program.

The University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College celebrated on March 9 the opening of a new community clinic, offering free occupational therapy care to a variety of patients.

USM's new Occupational Therapy clinic: Learning by helping

Working with Lewiston-area physicians and therapists, the new USM-LAC Community Clinic will offer specialized therapy to people who either have no insurance or have exhausted their benefits. It is already giving occupational therapy students authentic, real-world experience in the field while still being guided by faculty.
