Transfer Students

Sarah MearsTransfer your credits.

We’ll help you transfer your credits from regionally accredited institutions even if you attended years ago or went to multiple colleges.  At USM, half of all admitted students are transfers.

Let’s get started!

1. Are you a Transfer Student?
A transfer student is an applicant who has attempted twelve or more hours of college credit since graduating from high school or earning a GED. If you've taken courses at a regionally accredited institution and earned a C- or better, those courses can be evaluated.

2. Interested in finding out how many of your credits will transfer to USM?  Here’s how:

  • Receive an unofficial transfer credit evaluation.
Unofficial transfer evaluations are a great way to get started, learn how many of your credits can count toward completing your degree, and identifying the best path for moving forward on your educational goals.

Connecting with our Enrollment Advisor is a great first step.

    • Connect with Ashley Collins, USM’s Online Program Enrollment Advisor, to receive an unofficial transfer credit evaluation and identify the best way to use the credits you’ve already earned. Transfer credit reviews can be done in-person, online, or over-the-phone. Contact Ashley to get started today.

  • Interested in evaluating your credits on your own?
The University of Maine System’s Transfer Student Portal allows you to begin the process of evaluation your credit on your own.  University of Southern Maine’s Mainestreet portal also provides a transfer evaluation tool through the Transfer Course Equivalencies link under the Quick Links on the left side of the page.

New institutions and course equivalents are constantly being added to this database. If you do not see your college/university or a particular course listed, if you have questions about the information you find, or need additional details regarding the transfer credit evaluation process, please contact Ashley Collins.

  • Official Transfer EvaluationsTransfer Student Matt Jones
Once officially admitted to USM, you will receive a formal, official evaluation from the Office of Transfer Affairs. A paper copy will be mailed to you in the weeks following your admission. Keep in mind that the requirements for a bachelor's degree at USM include the accumulation of at least 120 credit hours with 30 of the last 45 of those hours earned at USM.

3. Are you ready to Apply?
A cumulative grade point average of 2.0 is required for admission. Consideration for admission into certain majors requires a higher GPA. In all cases, emphasis is placed on the most recent coursework. If you graduated from high school/earned your GED more than three years ago or have a GPA lower than 2.0 from your previous course work, consider including a resume to demonstrate your work experience as a testament to your ability to master the content in your courses. Electronic files of your resume can be sent to usmadm@usm.maine.edu
