After a delay in opening because of necessary restrictions due to the COVID-19 virus, we are excited to welcome everyone to come and view our Maine Bicentennial Exhibition: "Mapping Maine: The Land and Its Peoples, 1677-1842."

The exhibit will be on display from Thursday, September 10, 2020 through Saturday, March 20, 2021.

Gallery Hours:

University of Southern Maine and University of Maine System OML Hours:

With the exception of pre-scheduled University course visits, USM and UMS visitors (students, faculty, and staff) are welcome to visit the OML during the hours listed below.  No prior appointment is needed to come and see the Bicentennial exhibition (no more than four visitors allowed in the gallery at any one time), or to come and do research, view collection materials, etc. As ever, face coverings are required when on campus.  USM/UMS visitors should enter into the Glickman Library front desk area, scan their USM/UMS ID card, and then proceed through the exit door into the arcade and down to the OML, where we will greet you and facilitate your visit.

Sunday-Monday: Closed
Tuesday-Friday: 10am-4pm

University class visits, totaling no more than 10 students/visit, must be pre-scheduled, and can be held during off-hours, including Mondays.
Saturday: All Saturday visits must be made by appointment, using our online reservation system, and the time slots open to the public.

General Public

The OML will reopen to the General public on Thursday, September 10th.  We will be open to the general public by appointment only this fall on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.  As USM is closed to the general public for the fall semester, except for appointments, we have put together a plan to welcome back our public (non-USM/UMS community) patrons for gallery visits to see our new Bicentennial exhibition, "Mapping Maine: The Land and Its Peoples, 1677-1842," and to conduct research in our physical collections. Interested Gallery and research visitors will also be offered an opportunity to view our Globe collection while onsite.  Please direct any questions about visits to (207) 780-4850 or oml-usm@maine.edu.  We are not conducting group tours during the fall semester.

Both gallery visit appointments and research appointments can be made via our new easy to use online reservation system  As ever, there is no charge for research and gallery visits, but all public patrons will need to make a timed appointment before coming into the map library. There will be no drop in visits permitted between September and December; we will reassess for the spring semester in line with university guidelines. Please note that all visitors must practice social distancing and wear a face covering when on University property at all times. Face coverings are to be the type commonly recommended by public health officials. These are generally made of multiple layers of cloth, which cover the nose, mouth and chin and are secured either with ear loops or with ties behind the head. We will have disposable face coverings on hand should any visitors forget theirs.

All public visitors with appointments should proceed directly to the Osher Map Library once entering the front doors of the Glickman Family Library.  Please check in at our welcome table in the arcade, where we will orient you for your appointment, provide hand sanitizer, and welcome you back to the map library. On Thursdays and Fridays, parking is available in the Bedford Street Garage ($2/hour).  On Saturdays, visitors should park in the lot outside of the Glickman Library (no charge).
