Hanna Flewelling is a conductor, violinist, and saxophonist. Thanks to an extremely patient mother, she has studied violin since the age of five; first with Elizabeth Miller, longtime violist for the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and then under the guidance of Dino Liva. Her jazz and classical saxophone instructors include David Wells, Alan King, and Bill Street. She now holds a Bachelor of Music Education, with a focus in both violin and saxophone, from the University of Southern Maine, and a Masters of Music in Orchestral Conducting, completed under Robert Lehmann.

Hanna spent almost a decade working in southern Maine as an instrumental music teacher. At RSU14-Windham/Raymond, she served as both the Orchestral Music Director for the district, and Instrumental Director for WIndham High School. In recognition of her work in Windham, Hanna was nominated for, and awarded, Maine Music Educators Association “New Music Teacher of the Year” in May 2018. Most recently, Hanna worked as an instrumental music teacher at Thornton Academy.

Beginning in the fall of 2019, Hanna took on the role of Editor and Design Director for the Maine Music Educators Association publication The Maine Motif. Following her passion for design, Hanna now works full-time as the Design Director for the magazine Portland Monthly Magazine.

In her free time, she enjoys reading, drawing, cooking, telling terrible jokes, and playing nerdy games. She lives in Lewiston with her loving (and also extremely patient husband), as well as their two fluffy cats: Minerva and Seamus.
