The series is designed to examine the function - and, often, the dysfunction - of politics in Maine and Washington, and to consider how politics was "played" historically, what has changed (and why), what it will take for us to get back on course, and what Maine may be able to teach the nation in this regard.

Lectures will be held Thursday afternoons, September 19 through November 7, from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. on the USM Portland Campus. We have secured a formidable speaker lineup, including:

- Former U.S. Congressman Tom Allen
September 19, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

- Former U.S. Senator George Mitchell
September 26, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

- Former Maine Governor Kenneth M. Curtis
October 3, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

- U.S. Senator Angus King
October 17, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

- Former U.S. Congressman Barney Frank
October 31, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

The lecture series is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Bangor Daily News, Bernstein Shur, Cutler Family Fund, Dead River Company, Drummond Woodsum, F.L. Putnam Investment Management Company, Lewiston Sun Journal, Maine Community Foundation, Mainebiz, Peter Mills, and Portland Press Herald & Maine Sunday Telegram.
