I studied studio art and art history at Skidmore College, where I graduated in 1983. From there, I received my MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990. I earned my Ph.D. in 2015 in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in humanities and society from Union Institute & University. My dissertation, "Between Conviviality and Antagonism: Transactionalism in Contemporary Art Social Practices and Political Life" focused on the pragmatist underpinnings of 20th Century activist art.
