David Vardeman is the Testing Associate with the Office of Academic Assessment and the Office for Prior Learning Assessment.  He sees assessment of students’ skills as vital to a satisfying experience at USM, ensuring that students are in appropriate courses and thus have the necessary foundations from which to be positively challenged and to grow intellectually.

David worked as a Library Assistant in the Glickman Library Interlibrary Loan office for 11 years and then as the Administrative Assistant in the Center for Technology-Enhanced Learning for 4 years.  He appreciates the academic environment for the earnestness and the passion with which students and faculty strive to make this a more reasonable and humane world.

David was born and raised in Iowa, lived many years in Kentucky, and came to Maine in 1995.  He holds a B.A. from Indiana University Southeast in New Albany, Indiana, and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa.  He writes fiction and drama.
