PLA Credential Review

External Training and Credential Review

You may be able to earn course credit for some licenses, certificates and other credentials from organizations outside the University. We can review your license or certificate to determine whether credit is applicable.

Getting Started

Before beginning the credential review  process, students should:

  • Make an appointment with the Director. Ashley can be reached by phone at 207-780-5909 or by email at ashley.c.collins@maine.edu

  • Students should verify certifications are valid (not expired) and will not duplicate credit already on the transcript.

Credential Review Submission

If you have completed a training or certification job with your workplace, it is possible that we can offer you academic credit for what you learned during that training. Prepare your training materials (certificates, syllabi, other documentation, etc.) and submit it to the Office for Prior Learning Assessment for review. Certificates can be submitted in person, by mail, or via email. The Office works with faculty evaluators to determine academic credit.

Keep in mind:

  • All credential and licensing options are considered individually on a case-by-case basis.

  • Credit is awarded for what you have learned, not for the work you have done.

  • Credentials and external trainings are regularly reviewed by the Office and the PLA Advisory board.

  • If your credential/training has not been reviewed before, please allow up to two weeks for formal review.
