PLA Credential Review

pla-credential-breaultCredential Review

Credential Review pertains to experiential learning situations resulting in credentials or licenses which USM students submit in their original and current form to the Office for Prior Learning Assessment for college credit. Credit is awarded for what you have learned, not for the work you have done.

Undergraduate General Elective credit can be awarded for (but is not limited to) CPR and First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician, Certified Fire Fighter, Certified Nursing Assistant, Maine Pilot's License, real estate licenses, or courses from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

Credit options are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

  • All credential and licensing options are considered individually.
  • Certifications must be currently valid and cannot duplicate credit.
  • Approved credits will be valid for one year from the date of evaluation.
  • All credentials, licenses, certifications, and other prior learning experience must have been earned after graduation from high school or the equivalent.
  • Graduate credit can be earned for selected certifications.

Credentials and their credits are reviewed at least quarterly. The process is dynamic. Changes in credits and their awards may occur as the USM Faculty or the Prior Learning Assessment Advisory Board reviews them or as the course curricula behind the certifications change. Please expect these updates regularly as you consult the list of possible undergraduate credit options available to you in the Credential Review Overview.
