USM's Ronald Schmidt says new political campaigns need donations even more then visibility
USM Political Science Professor Ronald Schmidt told WCSH-TV that social media is an effective way for Maine politicians to announce campaigns. But getting early donor support is even more important. "The majority of voters aren't going to remember this week or this month when it comes time to vote in the primaries," Schmidt told the TV station following recent announcements by people planning to run for governor.

USM's Abdullahi earns prestigious scholarship to learn Arabic in Jordan
USM political science student Nairus Abdullahi earned a prestigious 2017 Critical Language Scholarship, enabling her to spend this summer learning Arabic in Jordan. Abdullahi, who lives in Lewiston, was one of roughly 550 students selected nationwide into the program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs to raise the number of Americans studying and mastering critical foreign languages.
Sen. Angus King greets Model U.N. delegates at Gorham Campus
U.S. Senator Angus King concluded the 2017 Maine Model U.N. Conference — a three-day gathering of 550 high schoolers at USM's Gorham Campus — with a plea for both risks and compromise. "Learn to make a difference," King told Model U.N. delegates gathered in Gorham's Costello Sports Complex. "Do new things. Err on the side of action."
