The 2015 Maine Government Summer Internship Program will be a full-time, paid work experience in a stage agency from May 26th to August 14th, 2015. Ronald Schmidt, a political scientist at the University of Southern Maine, said undecided voters are possibly “weighing what is in fact a real difference” among the candidates. Given the vastly different governing styles and platforms of Poliquin and Cain especially, voters simply are taking their time to choose.

There will be a Model UN teacher training session on December 5th and 6th from 9 am - 3 pm. Food will be provided. The Saturday session will be held at 102 Bedford Street on USM's Portland Campus. The Friday session will be held in a classroom on the Portland Campus. The specific building and room number will be announced when determined. Any faculty member interested in participating in the training are encourgaged to contact Lynn Kuzma at kuzma@maine.edu


UN Flags

The Maine Model United Nations Program hosts an annual conference where college and high school students participate in a simulation of United Nations procedures and enables students to practice organization, debate, conflict resolution and negotiation skills.  The MeMUNC Conference is fun, challenging, and provides a hands-on experience in the workings of world diplomacy while researching and analyzing current events.  If you are interested in getting involved either as an individual or group please contact the Department of History and Political Science at 780-4283.

PSSA Talks About Ferguson

Portland Protest December 5

You are all invited to share in conversation about the event in Ferguson, Missouri with the Political Science Student Association.  The meeting will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, December 9th at 4:00 pm in 306 Payson Smith.  Professor of History Leroy Rowe will be in attendance to share his thoughts and help facilitate conversation.    Light refreshments will be served.

Kyle Parker, a senior staff member on the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives spoke to the USM community on Monday, October 20th. Through his work as a policy adviser on the Helsinki Commission, Mr. Parker has played an influential role in developing landmark sanctions on human rights violators in Russia.
