As we begin this week, I suspect that many of us find ourselves frequently checking national media outlets in search of updates on the health of President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump as well as many senators and White House staff members. We wish President Trump, Mrs. Trump, and others who have tested positive a quick recovery.

USM announces $1 Million Promise Scholarship Challenge
On Thursday, September 24, President Cummings announced an unprecedented matching gift challenge to fully endow the Promise Scholarship program to benefit future generations of Maine students with high academic potential but limited financial means. The Promise matching gift challenge comes at a critical moment when scholarship support for higher education is more essential than ever.

Like many members of the USM community, I extend my sympathy to Justice Ginsburg’s family for their loss. I am also overcome with gratitude for Justice Ginsburg’s service to our nation. Whether we agreed with every decision she articulated from the bench or not, I believe we can agree that she leaves the country closer to fulfilling its promise of "equality before the law."

US News and World Reports’ just-released college rankings highlight the University of Southern Maine’s place among the top public universities in the Northeast. The university’s recognition — as an overall top public school, for social mobility and for its strong engineering program – highlight USM’s rising stature in Maine and throughout the country.

Labor Day provides an ideal opportunity to celebrate the labor of our staff and faculty in the service of our students and the world at large. Each day, I see our employees reaching out to prospective students, guiding incoming scholars, and tirelessly finding ways to teach complex subject matter in engaging and meaningful ways. Labor in service to others offers a wellspring of meaning and happiness if done with a sense of pride and joy. Our university is rich with employees who take this approach to their work, and we thank them deeply for their efforts.
