The new First Responder-Essential Worker Scholarship will be offered to 50 incoming and returning USM students who have been serving in first-responder roles or providing front-line critical services during the pandemic.

The University of Maine System Board of Trustees voted Nov. 18th to authorize System leadership to seek approval from the Maine Legislature to change the University of Southern Maine’s name to the University of Maine at Portland.

For five University of Southern Maine students and recent graduates, it seemed like an icy mission impossible. Fly 2,300 miles to the edge of the Arctic Circle and while still fighting the four hours stolen by an eastbound red-eye flight, team up with students from a variety of prestigious Nordic universities, and find a way to save the world. It became the Iceland challenge.
