USM's 18th President Announced

USM Colleagues -

It's a great honor for me to let you know that I'll shortly be publicly introducing Dr. Jacqueline (Jackie) Edmondson as the next president of the University of Southern Maine.

Before I do, I want to acknowledge a deep debt of gratitude to your president, Glenn Cummings, for his passionate student-centered leadership and commitment to USM these last seven years. Glenn has literally transformed the university, and I know he is deeply respected here. Glenn has done much for his successor to build on, and I trust that all of USM and the broader community will soon learn that Jackie has the unique qualifications and characteristics to build on Glenn's own accomplishments to take USM -- already an essential educational, economic and cultural asset -- to even greater heights in its service to our students, the University of Maine System, and the State of Maine.

Since 2017, Dr. Edmondson has been the Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer of Penn State Greater Allegheny, where nearly half of students are the first in their families to attend college.

Jackie will bring to USM more than two decades of collective service and progressive leadership experience at Penn State. She was a tenured professor and associate dean in the College of Education and later associate vice president and associate dean for undergraduate education, where she worked across 20 Penn State campuses to develop curriculum and programs to advance college access and affordability. Her research has focused on education policy, rural education, teacher education and popular culture. In addition to publication in numerous academic journals, she has authored eight books on subjects ranging from education policy to Jesse Owens to Jerry Garcia.

Jackie will live in the president’s residence on USM's Gorham campus with her husband, Michael. The couple have two adult sons, Jacob and Luke, who both live in the Northeast.

A presidential search is a lot of work, and I want to specifically thank the entire search committee, which included:

UMS Trustees James Erwin, Lisa Eames, and Roger Katz
USM Faculty Gerald LaSala, Rojin Mansouri, and Ronald Schmidt
USM Students Brianna Demaso, Hannah Lowell, and Samreena (Vijaya) Acharya
USM Staff members Tyler (tk) Kalahar and Danielle Letourneau
USM Dean Joanne Williams
USM Board of Visitors member Jana Lapoint
USM alumni & community members Lois Skillings, Dean Murray, and Julia Sleeper-Whiting
UMS Chancellor's designee Vendean Vafiades, Esq.

Jackie will assume the USM presidency on July 1, and I know she's already working to be prepared to hit the ground running.

Dan Malloy

A message from the Search Committee Chair

The USM Presidential Search Committee will work in active concert with the Academic Search Senior Consultants to conduct a thorough, inclusive, equitable, and orderly search process.

Presidential searches typically involve a balance of planning and flexibility, as well as confidentiality (for the candidates) and transparency (for the campus). We will work to ensure that we attract and retain the highest caliber candidates through the conclusion of the search. Any material changes will be posted to this website, and will be communicated directly to USM constituents as needed.

Please note that meetings of the Presidential Search Committee are subject to the Maine Freedom of Access Act (“Open Meetings”) law, and will be noticed in advance on the UMS Board website.

— James Erwin, Search Committee Chair, Board of Trustees member
