The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is an oral exam that is conducted over the telephone with a trained examiner. The exam is proctored by the Office for Prior Learning Assessment on USM's Portland campus. The exam takes approximately 15-30 minutes, during which the examiner determines the level of proficiency the test-taker has in a particular language, and how long the test-taker can maintain that level.
The ACTFL OPI costs $139. Students must pay via credit card at least ten days in advance of their preferred testing date.
Testing availability for the ACTFL OPI may be limited. Students wishing to schedule an ACTFL OPI must contact the Office for Prior Learning Assessment directly at 207-780-4663 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Students earning the following levels of proficiency will be awarded credit at USM:
Intermediate: LAN 1XX (8 credits)
Advanced: LAN 2XX (8 credits)
Credit for the ACTFL OPI at USM is only granted in the following languages:
Afrikaans, Akan-Twi, Assyrian, Azerbaijani, Baluchi, Bengali, Bosnian, Burmese, Chavacano, Chechen, Dari, Ga, Guajarati, Hausa, Hebrew, Hindi, Ilocano, Iraqi, Javanese, Kazakh, Kikongo, Kinyarwanda, Kirundi, Krio, Kurdish-Kurmanji, Kurdish-Sorani, Lao, Levantine, Lingala, Malayalam, Mandingo-Bambara, Nepali, Pashto, Punjabi, Sindhi, Sinhalese, Slovak, Somali, Swahili, Tajik, Tamil, Tausug, Telugu, Turkish, Turkmen, Uighur, Urdu, Uzbek, Wolof, Yoruba, Zulu
ACTFL OPI exams will not be administered for languages that are available through CLEP or BYU FLATS exams.
