World renowned business leader to deliver keynote address at USM’s Hussey Leadership Institute
Morgan Stanley’s Carla Harris, best-selling author of “Expect to Win,” will speak at Hannaford Hall on USM’s Portland Campus
PORTLAND, Maine — On March 12, 2020, Carla Harris, vice chairman, managing director and senior client advisor at Morgan Stanley’s global headquarters in New York City, will be the USM Corporate Partner’s keynote speaker at the third annual Timothy B. Hussey Leadership Institute.
Named to Fortune’s list of the 50 Most Powerful Black Executives in Corporate America, U.S. Banker’s Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Finance, and Essence Magazine’s list of the 50 Women Who are Shaping the World, Harris is world renowned for taking on tough leadership issues, often related to equity and inclusion for women and minorities in business.
The March 12th event focuses on “Maine’s Emerging Leaders: Cultivating Authentic Leadership.” Harris will address members of the public and more than 200 Maine leaders from a broad spectrum of businesses and organizations.
The Hussey Leadership Institute, a day long annual gathering honoring the legacy of Tim Hussey who passed away in 2016, is designed to engage and empower emerging leaders through a day-long exploration on how to build and sustain a successful, values-based business.
“USM is truly privileged to have Carla Harris speak at this year’s Timothy B. Hussey Leadership Institute, said Glenn Cummings, President of USM. “Like Carla, Tim Hussey believed passionately in the responsibility of business leaders to invest in their communities. Tim would have been deeply honored to have one of the world’s leading advocates for equity and inclusion on Wall Street.”
Harris’ keynote is titled “Carla’s Pearls: Strategies for Thriving in the Workplace.” She is known for inspiring and motivating audiences in-person and online through her well-earned pearls of wisdom – or “Carla’s Pearls.” This set of tools, strategies and lessons are sharpened by her own experiences climbing the global corporate ladder.
The author of two best-selling books, Expect to Win (2009) and Strategize to Win (2014), Harris also hosts the podcast “Access & Opportunity: Connecting Capital and Communities,” during which she interviews women entrepreneurs, minority business owners, venture capitalists and others, with a focus on inclusive innovation and opportunity.
After earning her MBA from Harvard, Harris joined the investment bank and financial services company Morgan Stanley in 1987, holding influential positions in mergers and acquisitions and equity capital markets, and overseeing some of the largest public offerings in history. Harris was chair of the Morgan Stanley Foundation from 2005 to 2014 and sits on the boards of several community organizations. She was appointed by President Obama to chair the National Women’s Business Council in 2013.
The multi-talented Harris is also an accomplished gospel singer who has produced three albums and performed at Carnegie Hall five times.
USM Corporate Partners Keynote Sponsor
Morgan Stanley’s Portland branch of financial advisors has generously underwritten Carla Harris as this year’s Corporate Partner’s Keynote.
A program of USM Corporate Partners, the Timothy B. Hussey Leadership Institute serves as a convener of more than 200 emerging business and community leaders who come together annually on the Portland campus for a day of inspiring conversations and engaging workshops on how to build and sustain a successful, values-based business.
The Hussey Institute honors the legacy of one of Maine’s most esteemed business and community leaders, Tim Hussey. Tim’s commitment to the principles of servant leadership helped shape the southern Maine community over this two decades as president and CEO of Hussey Seating Company, a 180-year-old family business. He envisioned an institute that would engage, educate and empower Maine’s emerging leaders to do well by doing good.
Launched in March 2018, the Timothy B. Hussey Institute features nationally known speakers as well as local entrepreneurs in a program designed to equip participants with actionable tools and strategies they can use to facilitate change within their organizations. The day culminates with a USM Corporate Partner’s keynote address, open to the public, delivered by a nationally recognized business thought leader.
The Hussey Leadership Institute was created through the generosity of friends and family of Tim Hussey and through our founding investors, Hussey Seating Company and Kennebunk Savings Bank.
