An Associated Press correspondent interviewed USM's Nancy Davis Griffin for a story on first-generation college students.
The story, which was circulated to newspapers nationwide, described USM efforts to help first-gen students, who comprise just over half the incoming class. Every incoming student must meet with an academic advisor before arriving on campus for classes, said Griffin, USM's vice president for enrollment management & student affairs.
"This is really about how education lifts this group of students out of poverty. And that's what we're doing," she said.
