Catie Peranzi and Hannah Ruhl, 2017 Featured Graduates

Catie Peranzi and Hannah Ruhl

After attending schools elsewhere, friends Catie Peranzi and Hannah Ruhl will together earn their graduate degrees, each becoming a Master of Public Health.

Catie Peranzi

Degree/s: Master of Public Health

Place of birth: Providence, R.I.

Hometown: Rehoboth, Mass.

What led you to pursue your education at USM? I initially applied to USM because of the location and the diversity of the public health program. I had actually decided to go elsewhere until my parents encouraged me to look at USM. I met with two of the faculty in the public health program and the conversations that I had with each of them are ultimately what led me to pursue my education at USM.

Catie PeranziHave you had an experience at USM that you feel changed your life or your view of the world? Absolutely! I have had several of these experiences while at USM, but the highlight was being able to do my field experience in Iceland. I was fortunate to study for six weeks in Reykjavik which allowed me to better understand the public health system of another country. This experience not only changed my view of the world but also helped shape my experience in public health.

What are your future plans? I find this to be a difficult question because my degree in public health has really opened my eyes to so many different possibilities in my field that I know I would be happy pursuing. I think for right now that I want to further explore the health education field, and hopefully, I will do that here in Maine. I am also looking forward to spending more time with friends and family.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank? Judy Tupper! Judy has been a great professor, mentor, role model, and friend these past two years. I am so thankful for her, especially since I am not sure that I would have ended up at USM if it had not been for her. Each of my professors and classmates also added tremendous value to my education and experience, which I cannot thank them enough for.

Hannah Ruhl

Hometown: Lincoln, Maine

Hannah RuhlWhat led you to pursue your education at USM? I started my degree at Hunter College in New York but was not happy with my program there. When I reached out to USM, I got a great response that made me more than happy to come back to Maine.

Have you had an experience at USM that you feel changed your life or your view of the world? The opportunities I received at USM to be involved in various projects gave me experiences I know I could not have gotten anywhere else.

What are your future plans? To get a job in my field where I can apply the skills I've learned.

Is there anyone you'd like to thank? All the wonderful faculty I've had the chance to work with.
