Join the University of Southern Maine Department of Theatre to celebrate the beauty and magic of the season with an original performance of spoken word, dance and music, “A Winter Idyll… with Spring in Sight.” This one weekend only show runs Thursday, December 6 through Sunday, December 9 and is a collaboration with the Dance program. All performances take place on the USM Gorham campus in historic Russell Hall.
The evening of dance and spoken word, accompanied by live and recorded music, will explore the magic of the winter months and the promise of spring. Starting with the beauty of fall, the performance tracks the long months - the first snowfall to the winter solstice, then culminating in the miraculous prospect of spring. The show is approximately 75 minutes with no intermission. Andrew Harris, Department of Theatre Chair, directs the piece and Maria Tzianabos is the director of dance.
For Meghan Labelle, a junior health science major, the piece has provided a unique chance to choreograph for the stage: “I’ve never choreographed before and I’m thankful that Maria gives all of us a chance to do this. I’ve also enjoyed that all the other students in my class have come up with their own choreography.”
Of the creation process, Tzianabos says, “Andrew and I developed the theme and basic concept and then set off with our casts to create the scenes separately. The dancers are students of my choreography class and our work in the classroom is highly collaborative. I think the creative process of puzzling the pieces together has been a great experience for the students.”
The Department of Theatre will be collecting food and cash donations for the Gorham Food Pantry during the run, audiences are encouraged to contribute.
