Find the joy and light of the season at these USM December events

USM Chamber Singers

Kick off the holiday season with the University of Southern Maine School of Music and Southworth Planetarium. Enjoy an evening of song with the USM Chamber Singers, or learn about the history and astronomy of the holiday season at the Planetarium.

Find USM’s voice studies director and soprano, Malinda Haslett, at Merrill Auditorium late in the month for a Christmas concert with James Kennerley and Friends of the Kotzschmar Organ.

“Joyous Sounds for a Festive Season”

The widely-acclaimed USM Chamber Singers present their popular concert, “Joyous Sounds for a Festive Season,” conducted by Nicolás Alberto Dosman. Besides traditional holiday favorites, this year the group will perform an eclectic program, opening the concert with "Karnaval" by Haitian-American composer, Sydney Guillaume. The music of Abbie Betinis, Andrea Ramsey and Moses Hogan Barnum will be featured, as well as the music of André Thomas, "Go Down In The Valley and Pray."

The singers in the USM Chamber Singers represent the most outstanding vocal performers at the USM and are chosen through a careful audition process; they have produced several CDs over the years, and have participated in international tours

“Season of Light”
Southworth Planetarium, USM Portland Campus

The popular holiday show "Season of Light" returns to the Southworth Planetarium in full-dome splendor. NPR'S Noah Adams narrates this omni-dome planetarium program about the history and astronomy of the holiday season. The show explores the reasons humans are fascinated with lighting up their lives during the December holiday season and includes: solstice festivals and Santa Claus, the history of Hanukkah and the "Star over Bethlehem."
