For the second consecutive year, the USM Huskies reached the championship baseball game of the NCAA Division III New York Regionals, ending an extraordinary 30-15 season.
The team fell short of the Swarthmore College Garnet in a Sunday evening 9-3 loss. Earlier that day, the Huskies managed to avoid elimination with a 12-10 win over top-seeded SUNY Cortland.
The earlier game had been a 10-inning battle that ended after USM junior Zach Quintal hit a two-run triple to break the tie. Quintal surged again in the final game, reaching base four times and scoring two runs. Sophomore Andrew Olszak also had three hits.
Both players were named to the all-tournament team.
Coach Ed Flaherty praised the tenacity of the players to earn the chance to play in the championship game.
“This is a remarkable bunch of players,” Flaherty said. “It was a very good season.”
The Portland Press Herald published a story about the tournament's final game.
