The University of Southern Maine (USM) is pleased to announce the first annual Timothy B. Hussey Leadership Institute on March 26 at the USM Portland campus. Through this event, we are honored to share Tim Hussey’s legacy of servant leadership with the next generation of Maine leaders. The Institute will bring together more than 100 current and future millennial leaders to explore how to do well in business while doing good for communities.
Harvard Business School Professor Rebecca Henderson will kick off the event with a presentation on how big and small companies can embrace the challenge of innovation. Breakout sessions will focus on creative problem solving, leading with integrity, embodied leadership, “doing well and doing good” and servant leadership in the workplace.
Professor Henderson also will close the event with the address, “Reimagining Capitalism: Business and the Big Problems.” She will discuss the powerful role of business in forging solutions to growing — even catastrophic — environmental and social concerns. She will pose the question, as a business person, what can you do? The address, which is open to the public, will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Hannaford Hall on the USM Portland campus.
“We are honored to share Tim Hussey's legacy of servant leadership with the next generation of Maine leaders. Tim demonstrated the value of running a business with an attitude of service towards his employees, his community, and the state,” said USM President Glenn Cummings. “In addition, as a business leader, Tim understood the importance of our education system in Maine and devoted countless hours to improving it.”
“Through the Timothy B. Hussey Leadership Institute, we are proud to convene emerging leaders from different sectors, and to both expose them to new ideas, and just as importantly, to each other,” said Ainsley Wallace, vice president of the USM Foundation and vice president for corporate engagement at USM.
Members of the Hussey family — including Tim's wife, Marcia Landry, and children Hannah, Philip, and Olivia — along with Gary Merrill, CEO of Hussey Seating expressed their excitement about the event. “Tim believed fiercely in the power of education, servant leadership, and commitment to community. We hope the Institute will inspire a new generation of Maine leaders to carry these same beliefs forward.”
