Reza Jalali’s “The Poets and the Assassin” to be performed at USM on Feb. 14
A new five-act play, “The Poet and the Assassin,” written by Reza Jalali of the University of Southern Maine’s Honors Program offers historic and contemporary insight into the situation of women in Iran, a society shrouded in mystery.
Although women in Iran have historically been in the forefront of national struggle for liberation, democracy, and human rights, and are among the most educated and progressive women in the Middle East region, their stories of courage, resistance, and survival, as well as the strength and character of a century-old women's movement in Iran, are unknown to most in the West, and remain, with a few exceptions, untold to this day.
A performance with a cast from Bates College will be held at Talbot Hall on USM’s Portland Campus on Wednesday, Feb.14 at 7 p.m. Though the performance is free and open to all, reservations are strongly recommended. A talk-back with the cast, director, and playwright will follow the performance. The play is being presented as part of USM Gloria S. Duclos Convocation.
