USM School of Music announces Spring 2018 season, opening with Valentine’s concert by Lantz and Kargul
The USM School of Music announced its full lineup of performances and events for the spring semester, including the popular Faculty Concert Series, a production of the musical “A Man of No Importance,” a music education workshop led by world-renowned educator and clinician Dr. Alice Hammel, the 3rd Annual Big Band Ballroom Bash and the Maine premiere of Stephen Edwards’ choral masterwork, “Requiem for My Mother.”
The spring season kicks off with violinist Ronald Lantz and pianist Laura Kargul’s “La Belle Epoque” at Woodford’s Congressional Church in Portland on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. In the tradition of their annual Valentine’s Day celebration, the pair will celebrate the most romantic era of French art and culture. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for seniors and free for students and anyone under 21. February continues with another Faculty Concert Series presentation, with cellist William Rounds, soprano Elisabeth Marshall and friends on Friday, Feb 23.
Author Terrence McNally’s musical “A Man of No Importance” kicks off March with eight shows, running from March 2nd through the 9th. The collaboration between the School of Music and the Department of Theatre is based on a 1994 movie of the same name, starring Albert Finney. On March 3, Dr. Alice Hammel will lead a day-long education workshop on music and students with autism spectrum disorder. The cost is $45 for teachers, $25 for non-USM students and free for USM students. Also, on March 5 and 6, classical guitarist Lily Afshar will host a master class and concert. And on March 24, the USM Concert Band and contemporary vocalist Taylor O’Donnell will headline “Cabaret: Bolcom, Bernstein and Shostakovich” at Gorham’s McCormack Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students, seniors and USM employees and alumni.
April begins with the 3rd Annual USM Big Band Ballroom Bash, held at the Hill Gym in Gorham. The April 6 event will feature the USM Jazz Ensemble and the Portland Jazz Orchestra. Admission is $20 per person or $35 per couple. On April 7, USM Chamber Singers, University Chorale, Southern Maine Children’s Chorus, Southern Maine Youth Chorale, Community Chorus at South Berwick and the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra will join to perform “Requiem for My Mother” at Merrill Auditorium. On April 14, USM will feature extraordinary solo performances in the 41st Annual Honors Recital.
On Saturday, April 21 and 22, the Opera Workshop will present the world premiere of composer Daniel Sonenberg’s “Girl in Six Beats.” The collaboration between USM’s Opera Workshop students, Opera Maine and The Telling Room, depicts a teenage girl’s journey through a purgatory-like dreamscape in the immediate aftermath of an attempt to end her own life. The opera is composed for five principal singers, a small chorus, and orchestrated for piano and small percussion (performed by the singers).
There are many other performances throughout the season. For a comprehensive list, go to the USM School of Music website.
