Maine Public recently profiled the Portland Empowered, which was created with support from USM, in its evening radio show, Maine Things Considered.
The story by reporter Robbie Feinberg was titled, "To Help Immigrants Succeed, Parents Work With Schools To Overcome Language Barrier.
The 5-minute-long piece interviewed a variety of people and described the educational opportunities and challenges to new Mainers.
Students may progress quickly, but many parents, because of the language barrier, feel disconnected from their children's education, wrote Feinberg.
"With support from USM's Muskie School of Public Service, they formed a group called Portland Empowered to advocate for these issues and work to fix them with Portland Public School administrators," she wrote."
