USM Assistant Research Professor Daniel Martinez consulted with WGME-TV on a story about puzzlingly high electricity bills.

The news organization wanted Martinez to explain why people’s bills may have risen dramatically year over year.

"I'm so baffled by these large numbers,” Martinez told reporter Marissa Bodnar. “I've never seen numbers that big,"

Appliances such as heat pumps and electric water heaters do use a lot of electricity, he told Bodnar. Given the bitter cold temperatures, he wouldn't be shocked to see some usage double but only during those chilly days.

Martinez teaches a variety of energy-related courses in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy.
