MMG Insurance gives USM $50K to help a fast-growing Maine industry

The gift supports the MEMIC John T. Leonard Endowed Chair in Risk Management and Insurance at USM

PORTLAND, Maine – University of Southern Maine’s President Glenn Cummings recently announced a $50,000 gift from Presque Isle-based MMG Insurance to support the University’s program in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI). Specifically, the gift will bolster the endowment for the MEMIC John T. Leonard Endowed Chair in Risk Management and Insurance, which honors the legacy of retired MEMIC CEO John Leonard who was instrumental in establishing the RMI program at USM.

“We’re proud to continue our investment and support of the Risk Management and Insurance program at USM,” says Larry M. Shaw, President & CEO of MMG Insurance. “MMG has seen more than a dozen employees participate in the program with great success.” Shaw continues, “The benefit to those employees, to our company, and to the industry are both immediate and long-term as we look to develop a talented workforce to lead our industry into the future.”

USM collaborated with partners like MMG to launch the RMI program in fall 2008, responding to the urgent workforce challenges faced by Maine’s burgeoning insurance industry.  Led by Dana Kerr, Ph.D., CPCU, ARM, the RMI program is the only formal academic program of its kind in Northern New England, and the only one north of Hartford. With the establishment of the MEMIC John T. Leonard Endowed Chair in Risk Management and Insurance, USM is seeking to expand and strengthen the program to benefit Maine employers, USM students and Maine’s economy.

“MMG has been an innovative partner with USM's Risk Management and Insurance program, working to increase access to insurance education well beyond the USM campus,” said program director Dana Kerr. “MMG’s generous contribution to the John T. Leonard MEMIC Endowed Chair in Risk Management and Insurance will allow for the continued growth of the RMI program in a variety of ways that will support the insurance industry and benefit the economies in Maine and throughout Northern New England."

Building on its strong foundation and through an infusion of philanthropic investment, USM is committed to expanding the scope and reach of the RMI program and its service to the industry. Once fully funded, the MEMIC John T. Leonard Endowed Chair in Risk Management and Insurance will ensure the sustainability, excellence and strength of the RMI program, enabling USM to attract top leadership talent in this critical field.
