Jan. 18, 2018 — Broad Changes to Maine’s Juvenile Justice System recommended by experts at USM and U Maine Law

Maine’s juvenile justice system should shift away from reliance on large facilities like Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland towards a continuum of care utilizing community-based in-home services and evidence-based out-of-home services for youth, according to a new white paper from the Justice Policy Program at the University of Southern Maine's Muskie School of Public Service and the Maine Center for Juvenile Policy and Law at the University of Maine School of Law.

Jan. 3, 2018 — Bachelor Degrees in Business, Public Administration, and More Now Available at Lewiston Auburn College Through New UMA-USM Partnership

The University of Southern Maine (USM) and the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) have forged a new partnership to offer expanded degree programs at Lewiston Auburn College (LAC). Beginning immediately, UMA will offer bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration and Public Administration at USM’s Lewiston campus. Students may register now with classes starting on January 22, 2018.

Dec. 13. 2017 — USM Art Department and Galleries present Beehive Design Collective exhibition, announce spring 2018 season

The University of Southern Maine’s Art Department and Galleries will kick off their spring 2018 season of exhibitions and programs with “Cross Pollinating the Grassroots: Works of the Beehive Design Collective” at USM’s AREA Gallery on the Portland campus on January 22.

Jan. 8, 2018 — USM earns Environmental Protection Agency awards for recycling and food recovery

For the seventh time in four years, the federal Environmental Protection Agency has honored the University of Southern Maine's efforts to reduce and reuse waste at its campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston. USM was the only Maine university to earn regional recognition for its overall recycling — awarded with a WasteWise Achievement Certificate — and the only public school in Maine to earn a Food Recovery Challenge Award for efforts to reduce and reuse food waste.

Jan. 3, 2018 — USM celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with upcoming events

The University of Southern Maine will host a public dialogue on the essence of liberty and race in America, featuring four renowned writers and instructors with the Stonecoast MFA program. The Jan. 12 talk, titled "The Task Before Us," features Stonecoast faculty members Amanda Johnston, Aaron Hamburger, Porochista Khakpour and guest JJ Amaworo Wilson.
