May 17, 2019 — MMG Insurance gives USM $50K to help a fast-growing Maine industry
PORTLAND, Maine – University of Southern Maine’s President Glenn Cummings recently announced a $50,000 gift from Presque Isle-based MMG Insurance to support the University’s program in Risk Management and Insurance (RMI). Specifically, the gift will bolster the endowment for the MEMIC John T. Leonard Endowed Chair in Risk Management and Insurance, which honors the legacy of retired MEMIC CEO John Leonard who was instrumental in establishing the RMI program at USM.

The USM Environmental Science and Policy department hosts the 24th annual Southern Maine Children’s Water Festival on Friday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Sullivan Gym, 66 Falmouth St., on the Portland Campus.
April 29, 2019 — USM to unveil collaboration with Maine composites industry leaders
The University of Southern Maine will announce a new collaboration that will bring the Composite Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) and $1.5 million worth of equipment into the Michael E. Dubyak Center for Digital Science & Innovation at USM.
April 24 — USM’s Muskie School of Public Service launches free workplace violence prevention training
The University of Southern Maine, in collaboration with Maine Small Business Development Centers, has launched a free online program to train small business retail workers in preventing and responding to violence.
April 11, 2019 —Renowned business ethicist to speak on values-driven businesses at USM’s 2nd annual Hussey Leadership Institute
Award-winning scholar and author Dr. Mary Gentile will speak on the topic of her book, “Giving Voice to Values: How to Speak Your Mind When You Know What’s Right” at the University of Southern Maine on April 22 at 5:30 p.m. The keynote address, which is free and open to the public, caps off the day-long Hussey Leadership Institute where nearly 200 emerging leaders from companies and organizations throughout the region will gather at USM to explore what it means to succeed in a values-driven business.

More than 200 USM students will present a wide variety of research projects as well as TED Talk-style presentations "Lightning Talks," on Friday, April 19, 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. at the annual "Thinking Matters" on the Portland Campus.
April 8, 2019 — Annual events celebrate Earth Day at USM - Bike Swap, E-Waste Recycling and more
Leading up to Earth Day, USM will co-host the Great Maine Bike Swap (April 14) with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, a Green Jobs Panel (April 19) and the 7th Annual Free E-Waste Recycling Day (April 20) - all events taking place on the Portland Campus.
April 5, 2019 —Live music 20 days out of 30 in April with USM School of Music
In April, with the semester at full blast, the music never stops at the USM School of Music. "Transient Canvas," the unique Boston-based electroacoustic bass clarinet and marimba duo, will be on campus Thursday, April 18 for a free master class and evening concert. Mid-month, voice faculty Malinda Haslett will lead students in the Opera Workshop celebrating 100 years of Bernstein. Jazz and composing faculty present their ensembles mid-month on campus, and the music reaches into the Portland community as well with Jazz Combos at One Longfellow Square, and the University Chorale and Southern Maine Youth Chorale at State Street Church.

April 2, 2019 —USM Theatre students finish season with uproarious comedy “The Foreigner”
The USM Department of Theatre rounds out its 2018-2019 theatrical season with the hilarious Larry Shue classic, “The Foreigner,” opening on Friday, April 19 and running through Sunday, April 28. All performances take place on the USM Gorham Campus in historic Russell Hall. Inspired and hilarious, this wildly comic depiction of our own absurdities may prove a cathartic reminder of the better aspects of our humanity.
