From Jeanne S. Paquette
Executive Director, Auxiliary Services
As we swing into finishing our first month of classes, there have been lots learned over the past few weeks. Being new here at USM, I'm learning about our parking challenges everyday. There are many moving parts and as I've told many, the most important thing is to communicate with our community on a regular basis around busy times especially on the Portland campus where parking is a burning issue for many.
As many of you know, we hold classes, events, conferences and other gatherings that require parking for lots of cars.
I want to let you know we are working on ways to give people a heads up on our busy times so we can all prepare to give ourselves extra time when needed. That being said, this week was extremely busy and parking was very difficult for many people. For that, I apologize for the inconvenience and I appreciate your patience as we move forward with addressing these issues.
Overall, Tuesdays and Thursdays are by far our busiest days; however, any day of the week can be a challenge to find parking, depending on campus activities. Here are a couple of suggestions:
1. If you have the opportunity to take the shuttle, public transportation or carpool when coming to our Portland campus, that would be great.
2. Please give yourself extra time especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
3. Please watch for our next parking email message that will contain a link to information on what the anticipated upcoming weekly volume will be. Place it into "favorites" so you can access the link anytime.
Please note: Safety is extremely important so watch your speed, stay alert while looking for a space (pedestrians are everywhere) and if you witness something that raises concern, report it to USM police or our garage attendants.
WEEK of 9/25/17 will be heavy everyday except Monday. Although Friday is usually light, we have Convocation that will impact parking so please try and use alternative transportation if coming to USM-Portland Campus.
Thank you all for your patience as we work through our parking challenges. We are looking to start a parking committee in the near future and if interested in serving please contact me.
