USM Update December 2017

In the fourth episode of the second season of "The USM Update," USM President Glenn Cummings welcomes guests to talk about USM's Department of Environmental Science and Policy and exciting new research in aquaponics, and the University's School of Business and the creative ways it's engaging students. Cummings also extends his greetings for the holiday season as we are enchanted by the sounds of USM's School of Music Chamber Singers. Watch the full show.

Starting our program, Cummings speaks with Dr. Karen Wilson and her students as they discuss their explorations in aquaponics, a system that combines conventional aquaculture — raising fish and other aquatic creatures in tanks — with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water). The project, funded in part by a $25,000 gift from Poland Spring/NestléWaters North America, allowed students to grow nine pounds of Swiss rainbow chard and five pounds of cilantro in their research lab over the fall semester. View the segment.

Cummings also sits down with Dr. Richard Bilodeau, lecturer in entrepreneurship, and his students to talk about the ways in which the USM School of Business prepares students for today's changing business climate. Bilodeau also talks about USM's relatively new minor in Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship, which seeks to expose USM students to the science behind creativity, tools they can use to train their brains and the fundamentals of entrepreneurship. Check it out.

Cummings also extends his greetings to the USM community as we transition into the final week of the fall 2017 semester, wishing all a happy and safe holiday season. Closing the show, we hear from the USM School of Music Chamber Singers as they perform select pieces from their Nov. 28, 2017 concert, "Joyous Sounds for a Festive Season," conducted by Nicolàs Alberto Dosman.
