The February 2019 episode of "The USM Update," now available online, again highlights the many achievements of University of Southern Maine (USM) students and faculty in and out of the classroom. Watch the full show.

First, USM President Glenn Cummings sits down with Al Bean, director of athletics at USM, to highlight the academic achievements of the university's Division III student athletes. It was recently announced that 31 fall student-athletes at USM have been recognized by the Little East Conference (LEC) for their outstanding academic achievements, earning them slots on the 2018 LEC Fall All-Academic Team. 

Cummings then sits down with three USM Huskies student athletes — Peter Del Gallo (wrestling), Ron Helderman (pole vault) and Kim Howrigan (women's basketball), who is president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) — to discuss how athletics and academics play togethe on and off the field. Cummings also congratulates the SAAC for winning a top award from the National Association of Division III Athletic Directors (NADIIIAA) for their Unified Sports Program working with Special Olympians. 'Now You See the Sky' by Catharine MurrayFollowing that, joining the show is Clifton Greim, president and chief executive officer of Harriman Architects and Engineers and chairman of USM's Board of Visitors, to discuss the market research performed as part of a proposed name change to USM. Watch now.

Rounding out the show is a discussion about the successes of USM's Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing, an exciting program bringing some of the nation's best writers together with residencies each winter and spring. Stonecoast MFA Director Justin Tussing explains the program and highlights a few of its notable alumni.

Joining Tussing is Catharine Murray, a 2017 graduate of the program, whose book "Now You See the Sky" was released in November. The book is available on Amazon, and at Portland bookstores Print in the city's East End, and Longfellow Books in Monument Square. Check it out.

"The USM Update" is a monthly, half-hour program covering all things about the University of Southern Maine — from groundbreaking research to workforce development initiatives and more — hosted by University President Glenn Cummings during the academic year.

The "Update" is produced by the USM Office of Public Affairs in partnership with the University's Communication and Media Studies Department and several media partners in Southern, Central and Coastal Maine covering more than 40 communities with a combined population of over 400,000 people. 

New episodes air on the first Monday of each month at 8:30 p.m. on the Portland-based Portland Media Center (formerly Community Television Network/CTN5) channel 5. Viewers outside the Portland area should check their local listings.
