Scholarship established for co-founding School of Music professor

Helen Heel celebrates her 97th birthday

A scholarship has been created in honor of one of the University of Southern Maine School of Music’s first professors, Helen Heel, who recently celebrated her 97th birthday.

Heel, an alumna of the Class of 1942, was one of two founding teachers of the Department of Music before it became the School of Music.

Several faculty in the School of Music and community members gathered with Heel at Gorham House of Pizza on Tuesday, Feb. 20, in celebration of Heel’s birthday.

Among them (pictured from left): Ron Cole, professor emeritus and previous director of the School of Music, Michele Kaschub, professor of music and coordinator of music education, Alan Kaschub, current director of the School of Music and Eileen Oberholtzer, USM Foundation Development Officer.
