Wrapping up a successful 2018-2019 season, the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team has now earned individual academic honors as Husky junior and 2019 NCAA Division III All-American Peter Del Gallo, of Gardiner, and freshman Jakob Peavey of South China, Maine are being recognized for their outstanding efforts in the classroom — having received 2018-2019 National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) Division III All-Academic Team distinction.

To be eligible for the academic honor, nominees must have at least a 3.2 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Freshmen are eligible if they have placed in the top six of their respective regional tournament, or have a win-percentage greater than .670, and have competed in half of the institution's scheduled NCAA competitions.

"To be named an NWCA All-Academic team is a huge accomplishment," said Mike Morin, Huskies' wrestling team head coach. "As a team and staff we talk about academics on a daily basis, and for Peter and Jake to have both the wrestling and academic requirements to earn this award is really impressive. It demonstrates how well-rounded these two are, and how well they balance everything."

Both Del Gallo and Peavey dominated the mat and the classroom during the 2018-2019 season. Peavey, a business student, competed at 285 for Southern Maine, compiling a 16-9 record, including 12 wins by fall.  At the 2019 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Futures tournament, Peavey claimed the 285 title, rumbling his way through the competition with a 4-0 record.

Becoming the fourth All-American in USM wrestling history, Del Gallo finished third in the nation at the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championship tournament to highlight an outstanding season that saw his national ranking peak at number 1. Finishing with a 5-1 record at the national championship, Del Gallo joins USM standouts Mike Morin (2009, 2010), Matt Ulrich (2010) and his brother, Dan Del Gallo (2017) as one of four All-Americans in the program.

Del Gallo finished the season with a record of 25-3, and will head into his senior year with a career mark of 99-8. An exercise science major, Del Gallo has twice earned All-Academic team honors from NEWA (2017, 2018) and is a 2017-2018 William B. Wise Scholar Athlete.
