The University of Southern Maine was ranked the “Number 1 Safest in Maine” by StateUniversity.com. The organization also ranked USM among Maine’s “Top 10” colleges.
StateUniversity.com is an organization that brings information about state universities across the country into one, easy-to-navigate website. The StateUniversity.com website says of its safety rankings, “Colleges and universities are ranked for campus safety on a scale that accounts for severity of a crime as well as frequency of crime.”
“USM takes the safety of its students, faculty and staff very seriously,” said Chief Student Affairs Officer Craig Hutchinson. “New programs, such as our Interpersonal Violence Prevention program, have been recently added to enhance the safety of our students and the campus community at large. With this “Number 1 Safest in Maine” ranking, our efforts seem to be paying off.”
When tabulating the top-ranked colleges, StateUniversity.com uses different criteria than other publications, stating, “The most important factors are a school's ACT/SAT scores, its student retention, faculty salary, and student/faculty ratio.” StateUniversity.com does not use peer evaluations to determine a college’s ranking.
