Huskies open the tournament this Wednesday against Trinity College.
The University of Southern Maine Huskies begins play this week in the 2012 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament. The Huskies are the sixth seed in the regional tournament at the Eastern Connecticut State University Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The Huskies’ first game is scheduled at 4:30 p.m., this Wednesday, May 16, against third-seeded Trinity College. The regional tournament is an eight-team, double-elimination event. The winner of the tournament will advance to the national tournament finals at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis., on May 25-29.
This is the Huskies’ 19th appearance in the NCAA tournament, and first trip to the regional since 2009. The Huskies, 27-17 overall, earned their berth into the tournament by winning the Little East Conference Championship Tournament this past weekend.
Southern Maine has won the NCAA regional crown on six occasions, and won the national title in 1991 and 1997. USM has an all-time record of 53-36 (.596) in NCAA tournament play.
Other teams playing in the regional tournament with Southern Maine include top-seeded Wheaton College (34-8), second-seeded Saint Joseph's College (Me.) (35-5), Trinity (32-9), fourth-seeded Keene State College (31-13), fifth-seeded Western New England College (33-11), seventh-seeded Bowdoin College (25-18) and the eighth seed, Bridgewater State College (30-13).
