The University of Southern Maine is pleased to announce the appointment of five new members to its Board of Visitors.
Additionally, the full 20-member Board of Visitors has elected its chair and vice-chair, Luc Nya and Jane Eberle.
Nya currently serves as a children's behavioral health program coordinator in the Maine Department of Health and Human Services. He has also worked in a variety of public and private settings since coming to Maine in 1992. Originally from Cameroon, Nya enrolled at USM, earning a bachelor's degree in economics in 1996. He later earned two master's degrees at the university: in public policy management from USM's Muskie School of Public Service in 1999 and counseling from USM's School of Education in 2008.
"The school gave me so much," Nya said. "I am happy to be in a place where I can volunteer my time to get the word out."
Nya wants to highlight the quality of a USM degree and its relevance to employers, connecting the school's academics and research functions with community's public and private sector needs.
"As the chair of the Board of Visitors, Luc will champion USM's critical role in Maine's future," President Glenn Cummings said. "As a thoughtful and passionate advocate for USM for many years, he will bring his unique voice and knowledge of the wider community back to his alma mater."
Jane Eberle will serve as the Board's vice chair. She currently works as the director of business partnerships for the South Portland School Department and formerly represented parts of Cape Elizabeth and South Portland in the Maine Legislature.
The new members are:
Kimberly Hamilton is president of FocusMaine, a private-sector led, job creation initiative.
Chris Lavoie is a broker/founder of DOMAINE at Keller Williams Realty.
Adam R. Lee is an attorney at Trafton, Matzen, Belleau & Frenette in Auburn, Maine.
Julia Trujillo Luengo directs the new Office of Economic Opportunity at the City of Portland.
Jennifer McCarthy is Maine Medical Center's chief operating officer, responsible for day-to-day operations of the hospital.
The USM Board of Visitors is an active group of volunteers who assists President Glenn Cummings in a range of activities including advocating for the university and raising private funds. According to Maine statute, the Board also reviews new academic programs, the university's five-year plan and makes final recommendations of any tuition increases to the University of Maine System Board of Trustees.
