USM Art Department and Galleries announce 2019-2020 exhibitions and events

Joseph Lupo artwork

The artwork of Visiting Artist, Joseph Lupo, will welcome students back to campus starting Tuesday, September 3 at USM’s AREA Gallery on the Portland Campus. The exhibition, “Deconstructed Invincible Iron Man,” kicks off the University of Southern Maine’s Art Department and Galleries Fall 2019 season of exhibitions and events. Lupo, Professor of Art and Printmaking Program Coordinator at West Virginia University, believes his deconstructed comics “can make us consider our stereotypes as we imagine the characters, settings and words missing from these scenes.”

“Our two fall exhibitions wonderfully dovetail, presenting work that is steeped in the rich artistic traditions of Modernism and comic books in order to seek new ground,” said Carolyn Eyler, USM director of exhibitions and programs.

The USM Art Galleries host exhibitions in Gorham and Portland showcasing multidisciplinary student projects in a range of media, as well as curated themes with socially engaged public programming that underscore USM's broadly inclusive mission. The USM Visiting Artist Series is sponsored in part by the Warren Memorial Foundation, continuing their multiple generous gifts to support the arts at USM for the 2019 - 2020 season.

All exhibitions and events hosted by the USM Art Department and Galleries are free and open to the public.

Joseph Lupo: Deconstructed Invincible Iron Man
AREA Gallery, Woodbury Campus Center, Portland

Visiting Artist Joseph Lupo’s new work deconstructs “The Invincible Iron Man” comic in order to make absurdist statements that reference William Burroughs and the “cut up technique” as well as DADAIST poetry. This work also investigates how presentation can influence the viewer’s interpretation of the information. Lupo states his work is intended to challenge our assumptions about fixed narratives, binary definitions, and meaning.

Joseph Lupo has been featured at the International Print Center of New York, The Contemporary Art Workshop in Chicago, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, the Indianapolis Art Center, and The Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta. His work is included in various permanent collections including the Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Duke University, the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Texas Tech University, and the Spencer Museum of Art. He currently holds the position of Professor of Art and Printmaking Program Coordinator at West Virginia University.

Contemporary Responses to Modernism: A New England Perspective
USM Art Gallery, Gorham Campus

Opening Reception: Thursday, Oct 10, 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a gallery talk by visiting curator Joanna Fink at 6:00 p.m.

The modernist movements of the first half of the 20th century radicalized Western art and continue to provide reference points for artists working today. Whether embracing the concepts of such movements as Cubism or Expressionism (for example), paying homage to specific masters, or challenging notions of who owns the canon, the artists in this exhibition engage with the past in their own contemporary language. Some of the work also stems from the artists’ strong ties to Maine or the New England region. Exhibiting artists include: Martha Armstrong, Gideon Bok, Bernard Chaet, Aaron Fink, Jon Imber, Dinorá Justice, David Kapp, Kayla Mohammadi, Jim Ritchie and Ann Weber. This exhibition is curated by Joanna Fink, director of the Alpha Gallery in Boston.
