USM Art Department and galleries presents USM Student Juried Exhibition through April 2

On Thursday, March 16, the USM Art Department and galleries celebrated the opening of the USM Student Juried Exhibition and awards at the USM Art Gallery in Gorham. The exhibition features the artwork of USM students, whether or not they have chosen to pursue a degree in art.

Each year, three jurors review the student submissions and select roughly 40 pieces for display. This year’s jurors were George Longfish, nationally-recognized painter and Native American elder; Clint Fulkerson, a young, up and coming artist who creates drawings and public art based on organic forms and processes; and Jocelyn Lee, photographer and founder of the new Portland artist-run space, Speedwell Projects.

sculptureThis year's juror awards went to Samuel Goldberg for "Winter, 2017," Melissa Bardsley for "The Drip" and Kayla Frost for "Self Portrait." This year's honorable mentions went to Julian Moron for "C74" and "D16," Liza Stratton for "Nude" and Melissa Bardsley "The Chain."

Each year, local businesses and USM alumni donate cash pizes for the juror awards and gift certificates for the honorable mentions. This year’s cash sponsors are Gorham House of Pizza and Home Instead, along with USM alumni Becky McKinnell ‘06 of iBec Creative, Bruce Roullard ‘84, branch manager of Embrace Home Loans in Portland, and Sharmon Toner ‘13. Additionally, Ace Hardware, Casco Bay Frames, Hunt’s Photo and Video, Artist and Craftsman, and Photo Market donated gift certificates.

Carolyn Eyler, Director of Exhibitions and Programs, said “the Juried Student Exhibition is an important event open to all students at USM. This is an opportunity for them to have art reviewed by recognized professionals in the field, prepare selected work for professional display and be congratulated in an opening reception and award ceremony.”

A small selection from the Student Juried Exhibition will be on display at the USM AREA Gallery in the Woodbury Campus Center in Portland from April 6 - May 1.
