The University of Southern Maine Women and Gender Studies program will hold its annual Women’s History Month Gala Reception on Friday, March 16. Following the reception will be a performance of a new play, “The Poets & the Assassin,” written by Reza Jalali, coordinator of USM Multicultural Student Affairs, and directed by Assunta Kent, USM associate professor of theater. Jalali, a native of Iran, came to the U.S. in the 1980s as a political refugee. He is the author of the 2010 children’s book, “Moon Watchers: Shirin’s Ramadan Miracle.”
The evening begins at 4:30 p.m. with a reception and cash bar in USM’s Wishcamper Center Atrium, Portland. Tickets for the reception are $15 public and $5 for students. Tickets must be purchased in advance by calling 780-4289.
The play will begin at 7 p.m. in USM’s Talbot Lecture Hall, Luther Bonney Hall, Portland. It is free and open to the public.
