University of Southern Maine (USM) cybersecurity expert Mark Monnin has been interviewed by the Portland Press Herald about the recent email hack at a Maine-based health care provider that potentially compromised the private information of about 30,000 patients.
The hack at InterMed, located in Portland, occurred between Sept. 4-6, and patients were notified last week.
Monnin, a lecturer in the Department of Technology, said hacking investigations can be time consuming because investigators may not know how sophisticated the hackers could be.
Those doing the hack could be foreign hackers, organized crime or an individual doing a “crime of opportunity,” Monnin said.
