The Portland Press Herald has quoted Bob Stein, USM’s executive director of public affairs and marketing, in an article regarding the university’s commitment to diversity amid reports the Trump administration may be investigating affirmative action laws.
Stein told reporters that, although there is no admissions advantage for underrepresented groups at USM, the university does encourage their recruitment.
“We don’t offer anything special to these populations, but we go above and beyond to communicate what we offer here to them,” Stein told the Press Herald. “It doesn’t matter who you are, where you come from. … You are welcome and supported here and you will definitely see people just like you on our campuses.”
USM also has a multicultural center, programs to help disadvantaged students and prayer rooms. Stein also noted the university’s Portland and Lewiston-Auburn locations foster a diverse, welcoming atmosphere, lending to its mission as “the University of Everyone.”
